Rubella Awareness and Vaccination Program by all clubs on D 323, India throughout 2016-17.
Rubella is a virus which could prove fatal for a foetus causing birth deformities for the new born if the pregnant mother contracts it during pregnancy. Some of the major birth defects caused by this virus is Deafness, Blindness, Heart deformities, and to some extent Autism. This can be avoided by immunisation.
In its endeavour to create a healthy society for future generations, the clubs of Inner Wheel District 323 took on the task of creating awareness about this crippling virus among school and college students in the district and also follow it up with immunisation camps wherever possible. A short video was made and circulated through social media. Consent forms from all the girls going to be immunized carried our Inner Wheel name and logo thereby publicizing our organization.
The clubs were motivated by District Chairman Shama Prasanna and ably guided by a team of doctors, PDC Nalini Prabhakar [IW District Rubella Coordinator] and Ms. Arasi Ponmozhi [IW District Special Projects Coordinator].
Adding impetus to the programme, the Tamil Nadu State Govt. has included the Rubella vaccine in the state vaccine list recently and has decided to immunise 1.8 crore children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years. February has been announced as the Rubella drive month in the state. Our District is now planning to carry this awareness program to colleges and also to partner the state govt to make this program a success.
So far awareness camps have been conducted in 35 educational institutions by the special projects team. Immunisation has been done for 900 plus students and is to be continued in the future months.
