Run Handi Move

Inner Wheel Clubs of Reunion Island, D920, all together support Run Handi Move (RHM), October 2016

The NGO RUN HANDI MOVE was born in 2005 with the vocation of giving children, teens and adults with reduced mobility the opportunity to take part into cultural and sports activities and discover the amazing inland landscapes of Reunion Island through steep hiking trails, carried by voluntary carriers in “joëlettes”, sort of sedan chairs with 1 wheel and 2 shafts at the front and 2 at the back.

Every 2 years, RHM organizes their participation to the “Grand Raid”, also named “Diagonal for crazy ones”, a 104 miles famous trail race crossing Reunion Island from South to North. So, on late evening of October 20th 2016 , the RHM team (composed of 3 “joëlettes”, the 3 first carried people with reduced mobility and 50 voluntary carriers alternating with each other all along the trail) was on the starting line with 2000 other participants for 3 days race. In total 20 motor disabled people were carried every 5 miles: a logistical organization with helicopters taking each of them to their departure spot and getting them back from their point of arrival.

The emotion was obvious on the arrival of the RHM team after up to 60 hours of efforts: all the carried people with their families joined the joelettes and the carriers to cross the finish line together, cheered by thousands of people, singing their motto "nou tienbo, nous largue pa" "We keep going, we never give up".

IW District 920 members of the 5 clubs of Reunion Island worked together to offer a great welcome to the voluntary carriers of “joelettes”, the 20 carried ones with their families and all the members of the association. We walked the last mile on their side before providing a collation with drinks, fruit, cakes… to more than 150 people.

We received a lesson of life from the porters, the people with reduced mobility, the association Run Handi Move whose values are respect, mutual assistance, sharing, and tenacity.
